To become an Endocrinologist you must already be a qualified medical doctor MD. This requires:

  1. Obtaining a suitable Bachelor’s degree (health science, pharmacy, nursing, science etc).
  2. Passing the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT).
  3. Completing a Doctor of Medicine (MD).
  4. Working as an intern at a hospital for at least one year.
  5. Obtaining general medical registration through the Medical Board of Australia.
Once you are a registered MD you must apply to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) to undertake specialist training. This includes 3 years of clinical training in Adult Internal Medicine and another 3 years of Advanced Training in Endocrinology.

Endocrinologists are medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that involve the human glands and hormones. They are primarily known for treating diabetes, osteoporosis, thyroid imbalances, infertility, and issues surrounding menopause.

As an Endocrinologist you could be holding an initial consultation with a patient who has been referred by an MD and reviewing their medical records, ordering laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures for a young patient with early-onset osteoporosis, prescribing medication for a patient with an underactive thyroid, running tests to determine a cause of infertility in a male patient, or advising the parents of a young patient with Type 1 Diabetes.

It can take more than 16 years to become a fully qualified Endocrinologist in Australia, so you’ll need an abundance of focus, drive and patience to succeed in this occupation.
