Student Counsellors usually need a bachelor’s degree in social work or psychology, but you could also get started with a Diploma of Counselling. The Diploma takes 12 months to complete and requires a work placement. If you are working with children or anyone under 18 you will also require a national police check and working with children clearance.

Student Counsellor careers

Student Counsellors support students as they navigate the school, college, or higher education system. They conduct counselling interviews with students and help them work through learning difficulties, bullying, financial and family problems.

As a Student Counsellor you could be employed by a school, university, community college or community service organisation, but you might also find employment with a government department. To be successful in this career you’ll need highly developed interpersonal skills and be adept at administration and paperwork.
